Howdy folks! First, I want to thank Robey and Precinct Omega for building such a cool game. Well done, and let's have lots of cool stuff going forward! SO, with that out of the way I also want to say FIRST!! Now, on to the meats. I'll post some pics of our large set of things we're using for Horizon Wars (and with Ragnarok on the way we can start playing with the initial idea we had of robots vs. cthulhus!). What I want to talk about though is the lines we can use for this scale. We literally have a couple of hundred Reaper C.A.V.'s (from the original Kickstarter), but we want some different things too. The scale we've chosen for this game / setting is 10mm because of that, but what can we do to supplement it? - C.A.V. by Reaper Miniatures
- Heavy Gear Blitz by Dream Pod 9
- Firestorm Planetfall by Spartan Games
- Dropzone Commander by Hawk Wargames
- MechWarrior: Dark Age by WizKids
This is a pretty good spread, but it seems 10mm wargaming is just REALLY becoming a thing in the last few years. Any suggestions as to what else we can look at?
Thanks a lot (in advance) for your breadth of knowledge!

Those are some good ones! I'll get on that later when I have time to really sit and peruse the pieces - anything in particular you've been looking at?

Back when I started looking at Horizon Wars I spent a while looking up 6mm and 10mm manufacturers. I decided to go with 6mm for my armies in the end, but there are some great 10mm models out there.

I'd also point at the "6mm" range from 15mm.co.uk which is actually much more like 8mm and would fit fine alongside 10mm stuff. Some 15mm ranges are also a bit on the short side and worth looking at. My Peter Pig 15mm US Infantry are definitely a lot shorter than my Flames of War 15mm US Infantry.
I like to mix and match my mechs a lot and I include 6mm, 10mm and 15mm in my collection. A giant robot's a giant robot, after all.

When I first read Horizon Wars I was confused by the recommended force point size. I think is was 9 points per side for a small patrol sized game on a 3x3 table. Now assuming I wanted to play a tank heavy force this would be 3 tanks. This seems to me to be a very small force for 6mm. Also the largest force was 27 puts on a 4x6 table. This would be 9 tanks. We have been playing with triple the recommended points in my see forces with 2 commanders per side dividing the points between them.
The table does not seem overcrowded and we finish in about 2 hours on a 4x6 table and have a good game. Am I missing something?

If you just go with P3 elements like tanks then, yes, it's going to be quite a small force (although, do remember that if you're just going conventional forces, then a 9-point heavy cavalry force will comprise four tanks - a free CHQ, plus three more tanks. FC9 could equally be ten light infantry elements - if you work on the assumption of one element equals one ten-man section or equivalent, then that's a full company of three platoons plus a company command. In New Adventures, the heavy cavalry squadron facing down the infantry company will start with a -3 Intelligence Rating, whilst the infantry company would have a modest -1. More importantly, the heavy cavalry squadron would be taking a hefty 8 damage per turn from Momentum damage (not surprising - there are dangerous light infantry sections all over the place!), whilst the infantry company would be struggling to coordinate its squads, having only ten actions to spread amongst ten elements. To summarize, diversity is the key. And diversity necessarily will mean more elements. I consider a good number at FC9 to be about five. Coincidentally (not), I started playing the game with a single box of EM4 mechs - one P3, two P2 and two P1. Hm... What does that add up to? R.

R. F I realize it would be 4 tanks now I forgot the CHQ. Still on a 3 by 3 foot board that is nearly 1 foot per tank. With no ability to add infantry supports to help them cover the terrain involved. I guess I am saying that using the suggested terrain does not allow me to use what I think would be a balanced force at this size of table maybe 2 platoons of infantry and a platoon of tanks (3) plus either an infantry or tank CHQ. TO cover a terrain heavy board as suggested this will be necessary. Example. I have written a scenario where the attackers must exit off the defenders side of the board. Both sides do a Map Deployment so essentially neither side knows where the other is at start(Defenders start on table up to 6 inches in. Attackers designate 2 points of entry) If I want to command a force to Defend that ground and prevent the attacker from exiting I need more troops. I see the point you are making in regards to an infantry company Vs a just tank force. I prefer to play a mixed force or combined arms force engagement of about company size at this table size as indicated in my force above. Now ALL of that being said. The rules, if I modify my force size(No reason I can't for a scenario like the above.), are outstanding. We have recently fought 3 engagements similar to the above using some Brigade 6mm and the results are amazing. In an evening we can finish a hard fought battle using complex tactics without complex rules. It is the best of both worlds. A game that is easy to learn with the ability to employ real tactics that are complex and take time to master. Thank you for all the great work Robey!

I'll take the compliment! Because I had to write HW essentially in a vacuum, with no established player- or fan-base with whom to test it, and because I also have a full-time job, I have to accept that HW as it finally reached the market isn't the 100% categorically finished game I yearned for. But it was always intended to be a game for others to build upon, adapt and amend it to their own particular needs. Watch out with exit-based objectives, because Rapid movement really is very quick indeed. It's quite easy to power past an enemy, take the damage and pile it all into areas other than M, and just splurge off the table edge. I recommend a creative use of difficult and hazardous terrain to make such missions *much* more entertaining. R.

getting nothing but 404 errors when i try and purchase them and some other bits Obviously, I can't speak for the functionality of the websites of other companies, but I've never had any trouble buying from EM4 directly: em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.htmlScroll down. The mechs are near the bottom and currently in stock for £2.55 plus postage! R.
